Chapter 2: The Folder That Changed Everything

Denise arrived at 8 a.m.

with a manila folder pressed against her chest.

Her hands were shaking.

"I'm so sorry," she said before she even sat down.

"I didn't know how far she'd taken it."

Inside the folder was a document.

Two pages, printed and signed.

My name was on it.

Except I had never signed anything.

"What is this?" I asked.

Denise couldn't look at me.

"Harper had a real estate attorney draw it up six weeks ago.

She told him you'd already agreed."

It was a co-ownership transfer.

Harper had drafted paperwork that would add her name to the deed of my house — the house I had owned alone for nineteen years, the house my late husband and I had bought together, the house I had paid off by myself after he passed.

My hands went cold.

"She told her entire family the transfer was already in progress," Denise whispered.

"That's why they came last night.

They were celebrating."

The champagne glasses.

The fourteen people.

The sense of entitlement that filled every corner of my home.

It hadn't been a dinner party.

It had been a celebration of something Harper believed was already done.

I picked up my phone and called my attorney.

But before the line connected, a car pulled into my driveway.

Harper.

And she wasn't alone.
