Rachel stayed on the line.
I could hear her breathing.
"He told me it was just a legal formality," she finally said.
"He told me the house would be in our names by last Christmas."
I sat on the edge of the hotel bed and said nothing.
"How long have you owned Hawthorne?" she asked.
"Twenty-two years," I said.
"My name is the only name on that deed.
It has never changed."
Another silence.
Then, quietly: "He showed me papers."
That stopped me.
"What kind of papers?"
"A transfer document.
He said you signed it two years ago." Her voice had shifted.
The anger was gone.
Something closer to fear had taken its place.
I had never signed anything.
I told her that clearly.
Rachel said, "Then I need to see what Martin has in that file."
She wasn't wrong.
But what she said next made my hands go cold.
"There's something else," she said slowly.
"Daniel took out a loan last year.
He told the bank Hawthorne was collateral.
He said you had already agreed."
I had never agreed to anything.
The room felt very still.
I thought about Daniel's face when I called Martin.
Not guilt.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
