Chapter 2: The Door Opens

"I know more than you think, Emma," I said calmly.
"I've known for a long time."
She went silent.
That silence told me everything.
"You need to destroy that," she finally hissed.
"Right now.
If David sees it—"
"David isn't who I'm worried about," I said.
She started crying then.
Not sad tears.
Desperate ones.
"Please," she whispered.
"I'll drop the whole car thing.
I swear.
Just tell me you haven't shown anyone."
But I hadn't called her to negotiate.
Because what Emma didn't know was that I wasn't alone when she arrived at my house the day before.
My son had been sitting in my back room the entire time.
He'd come over early to help me fix a leaking pipe.
He heard every single word she said to me.
Every threat.
Every ultimatum.
Every cold, calculated sentence.
And when the courier knocked on Emma's door that morning, David was already on his way there too.
I heard the front door open on her end of the call.
Then I heard David's voice — quiet, controlled, devastated.
"Emma.
What is this?"
The line went dead.
