Melissa's scream brought Jason running from the driveway.
"What's going on?" he demanded, looking between us.
Melissa pointed at me, her face red.
"She did this!
Tell her she has to pay!"
Jason frowned.
"Pay for what?"
Before she could answer, I held up the bill she had given me the morning before.
Jason took it slowly.
His eyes moved down the page.
The color drained from his face.
"Melissa…
what is this?"
"She stayed here for a week," Melissa snapped.
"She used our electricity, our food, our hot water.
Why should that be free?"
Jason looked up at her.
His voice was quiet, but his jaw was tight.
"She watched our children.
She cooked every meal.
She cleaned this entire house."
"Nobody asked her to."
The silence that followed was heavy.
Then Jason turned to me.
"Mom, I'm so sorry.
I had no idea."
But Melissa wasn't finished.
She crossed her arms and said something that made Jason go completely still.
