Chapter 2: Everyone Is Watching

Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't move.

Rebecca's smile flickered.

"Darling.

Everyone is watching."

"I know," I said.

I reached into my jacket and held up the note.

The color left her face.

"Where did you get that?" she whispered.

"Emily gave it to me."

She glanced at our daughter, then back at me.

When she spoke again, her voice had dropped so low only I could hear it.

"That was a private arrangement.

You said yourself she needs more structure than you can give her."

"I never said that."

"You did.

At dinner.

Three weeks ago.

You said you were struggling."

Emily pressed her face into my shoulder.

I looked at Rebecca — really looked at her — and realized I was seeing her clearly for the first time.

"Who were you planning to send her to?"

She didn't answer.

"Rebecca.

Who."

She straightened.

Smoothed her dress.

Smiled again, smaller this time.

"Someone qualified.

Someone without the emotional attachment that's been holding that child back."

The priest cleared his throat near the altar.

Two hundred people were watching us.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

*She's been planning this since before she met you.

I have proof.

Don't say 'I do.'*
