Chapter 2: The Message from a Stranger

The teacher's words came slowly, like she was choosing each one carefully.
"On the last night, three boys from the group got into Lily's room."
My hand gripped the counter.
"They said it was a prank.
But Lily locked herself in the bathroom for two hours and wouldn't come out.
We called the front desk.
We had to get security."
"Security?" My voice didn't sound like mine.
"We reported it to the principal the next morning.
He said he would contact every family personally." She paused.
"I assumed that meant you too."
I couldn't speak.
Lily had been alone in that bathroom.
Terrified.
Two thousand miles from home.
And no one had called me.
"Which boys?" I finally said.
Another silence.
"I'm not supposed to say until the school completes its review."
"She is my daughter."
"I know.
I'm so sorry.
I thought you knew.
I never would have—"
I hung up and walked straight to Lily's door.
"Lily." My voice broke.
"I know.
The teacher just told me.
You don't have to explain anything.
I just need you to open the door."
Nothing.
Then, very quietly, I heard her slide down against the other side of the door and start to cry.
But before I could say another word, my phone buzzed.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
*"You should know there's a video.
And the school has already seen it."*
