Chapter 2: The Ring, the Paper, and the Voice I Didn't Expect

I reached inside the toe of that tiny sock with two fingers.
What I pulled out was a small folded piece of paper — and a ring.
My ring.
The thin gold band I had given Clara the day she turned sixteen.
The one she threw at me the night she left.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely unfold the paper.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a medical form.
Clara's name was at the top.
And below it — a diagnosis I never expected to see.
I read the same line four times before it became real.
I grabbed my phone.
After fifteen years, I still knew her number by heart.
I had never deleted it.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then a voice answered — but it wasn't Clara.
It was a little girl.
"Hello?" she said.
"Are you Grandma?"
I couldn't speak.
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
"Mama said you might call," the little girl said quietly.
"She said to tell you she's sorry.
And that she needs you."
Then the line went silent.
And in the background — just before the call cut off — I heard something that made my whole body go cold.
A woman's voice.
Not Clara's.
"She shouldn't have called her.
It's too late for that now."
---
What did that medical form say — and who was that woman in the background?

The truth behind Clara's fifteen years of silence is darker than anyone expected.
