Chapter 2: Ask Him About Diane

There was a folded note.
No envelope.
No name.
Just a small piece of paper tucked flat against the board.
My hands were shaking as I opened it.
Four words.
*Ask him about Diane.*
I looked up.
Mark was laughing at something across the yard, one hand resting on Lauren's shoulder.
Lauren was still wiping her eyes.
I turned to the baker.
"Who is Diane?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know.
But the woman who put that note there — she was crying when she left."
I folded the note and slipped it into my pocket.
I walked back toward the party.
Smiled at a few guests.
Picked up a cup I didn't drink from.
Then I stepped close to Mark.
"Having a good time?"
"Best day," he said, grinning.
"Who's Diane?"
His smile didn't disappear.
It froze.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
"Don't know anyone by that name."
He turned back to Lauren and kissed the side of her head.
But his jaw was tight.
And when he thought no one was watching, he pulled out his phone and typed something fast.
Then Lauren's phone buzzed.
She glanced at the screen.
And the color drained from her face.
