Chapter 2: I Knew Your Mother

The room went completely still.
Our daughter's fiancé looked down at the tattoo, then back at my husband.
"She was my mother," he said quietly.
"She passed away when I was seven."
My husband didn't move.
Didn't blink.
I watched the color drain from his face the way it drains from someone who has just heard something they were never supposed to hear.
"What was her name?" my husband asked.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
The young man answered.
And my husband sat down slowly, like his legs had stopped working.
Our daughter grabbed my arm.
"Mom — what's happening?
Does Dad know her?"
I didn't answer because I didn't know.
But I had seen that look on my husband's face once before.
Twenty-eight years ago.
At a funeral he told me was for an old work colleague.
A funeral I was never invited to.
A funeral he came home from and cried alone in the garage for two hours.
I never asked why.
I never pushed.
Now I was sitting at my own dinner table watching my husband stare at a de@d woman's face tattooed on my daughter's fiancé's arm — and I realized I should have asked.
He finally looked up.
Not at me.
Not at our daughter.
He looked at the young man and said four words that changed everything.
"I knew your mother."
