Chapter 2: The Woman Who Already Knew

That's when the restaurant door opened.
A woman in a sharp blazer walked straight to our table.
She didn't look at me.
She looked directly at Marcus.
"I thought that was your car outside," she said.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Marcus went pale.
"Sandra, this isn't — "
"Save it." She pulled out her phone and placed it face-up on the table between us.
On the screen was a bank notification.
An account with his name on it.
The balance was $47.
"Six figures," she said quietly.
"Tell her which direction."
I looked at Marcus.
He couldn't speak.
Sandra glanced at me with something close to an apology in her eyes.
"He does this.
Nice restaurant, big talk, waits for the woman to pay.
I'm his ex-wife.
I've been warning people for two years."
The waitress appeared with the check again.
Without a word, Sandra picked it up, looked at the total, and set her card down.
"I've got hers," she said.
"He can sort himself out."
Marcus pushed back his chair like he was about to leave.
That's when Sandra said the one thing that made him freeze completely.
