Chapter 2: What Was Folded Inside

Part 2 👇

It was a folded piece of paper.

Not a note.

Not a receipt.

A paternity test result.

Vanessa's hands were shaking as she read it.

The room had gone quiet.

Even the music seemed to stop.

"This says…" She couldn't finish the sentence.

"It says the baby isn't mine," Ryan said, his voice low and tight.

Vanessa's head snapped up.

"You had me tested?

You went behind my back and had me tested?"

"I had questions."

"You had questions." She laughed, but it wasn't funny.

"And you kept this in her dress?

In a pocket?

Like some kind of insurance policy?"

I hadn't planned any of this.

I'd tucked that paper away the night I found it on Ryan's desk, the night I realized he didn't just betray me — he'd been building a case against her too.

He wasn't loyal to either of us.

He was only ever loyal to himself.

Vanessa turned to me, and for the first time, she didn't look smug.

She looked exactly the way I had felt the day he changed the locks.

"Did you know?" she whispered.

Before I could answer, Ryan stepped forward.

"Don't say another word," he said — but he wasn't talking to me.

He was talking to Vanessa.

And the way he said it made my bl00d run cold.

What Ryan said next — and what Vanessa did with that paper — changed everything.
