Chapter 2: She Had Been Ready All Along

Part 2 — continued from the comments 👇
Nicole set a small laptop on the counter and turned the screen to face the room.
It was security footage.
Clear.
Timestamped.
From that very morning.
Edward reaching across the table.
The folded napkin.
His fingers pressing something into the icing while his girlfriend blocked the view with her purse.
Every second of it.
Right there on the screen.
The bakery went dead silent.
"I installed the camera last week," Nicole said quietly.
"After the second time he drove past and stared through the window."
I hadn't known about the camera.
I hadn't known about the drive-pasts either.
Edward's girlfriend took a small step away from him.
"You told me she was making things up," she said.
He didn't answer her.
"Dad." Nicole's voice didn't shake.
"You fought Mom over every dollar.
You never paid a cent for us.
And then you came here to take the one thing she built herself."
A woman at the corner table stood up.
"I saw it too," she said.
"I didn't understand what I was seeing until now.
But I saw his hand move."
Edward looked at the door.
Then at Nicole.
Then at me.
And for the first time since our marriage ended, he had nothing to say.
But Nicole wasn't finished.
She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out something small — something I recognized immediately.
My hands went cold.
