Chapter 2: The Secret in Her Purse

Santiago lifted me into his arms and faced Fernanda.

“Take your purse and leave.”

“You can’t be serious,” she snapped.

“My father helped your company secure three major contracts.”

“And you thought that gave you permission to hurt my sister?”

Fernanda’s face hardened.

“Choose carefully, Santiago.

Your family could lose millions over this.”

I felt his arms tighten around me.

“Ramiro, save three copies of that recording,” he said.

“Send one to my father and one to my grandfather.”

Ramiro glanced at Fernanda’s open purse.

“Sir, there’s something else.”

He pulled out a folder bearing the Mendoza family seal.

Inside were photographs of my trust documents and a handwritten note: FIRST FEMALE HEIR—CONTROL TRANSFERS AT TWENTY-FIVE.

Santiago went still.

“Why do you have this?”

Fernanda lunged for the folder.

“That isn’t mine!”

Before she could reach it, the front door opened.

Grandfather Ernesto entered with my parents behind him.

He looked at my swollen cheek, then at the frozen security footage on the tablet.

“Who touched Valentina?” he asked.

No one answered.

Ernesto picked up Fernanda’s note, read it once, and turned to Ramiro.

“Lock the gates.

Call the family attorney.” Then he looked directly at Fernanda.

“You didn’t come here for Santiago.

You came here because you knew exactly who that little girl would become.”

Fernanda’s knees nearly gave way.
