Chapter 2: Four Words on the Back of a Photograph

Mr.

Lawson cut the stitching slowly, like he was afraid of what was inside.

A folded envelope slipped out.

Old paper.

Yellowed at the edges.

Eric's name was written on the front in Dad's handwriting.

My hands were shaking.

"How long have you known about this?" I asked Mr.

Lawson.

"Long enough," he said quietly.

"Your father made me promise not to say a word until the suit was found."

Eric opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten letter.

Eric looked at the photo and went completely still.

"Eric." I touched his arm.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

He just handed me the photograph.

It was a picture of Dad — young, maybe thirty — standing next to a woman I had never seen before.

She was holding a baby.

Dad was smiling like I'd never seen him smile in any family photo.

I turned it over.

On the back, in Dad's handwriting, were four words.

*Tell him the truth.*

I looked at Eric.

He was already reading the letter.

Whatever was on that page made the color drain from his face.

"Eric.

What does it say?"

He folded it slowly and pressed it against his chest.

"It says," he whispered, "that Dad wasn't my father."
