Chapter 2: What the Groom Told Our Father

Part 2 ⬇️
The meeting ended at noon.
I sat alone in the conference room for eleven minutes.
Not because I was hurt.
Because I was calculating.
Every contract had my name on it.
Every vendor had my number.
Every deposit had come from my personal account — not a joint account, not a family fund.
Mine.
I opened my laptop and made three phone calls.
The first was to Cedar Grove Estate.
"This is regarding the reservation under Julian Mercer.
I need to discuss the payment status."
The coordinator paused.
"Of course.
You're listed as the sole guarantor."
"That's correct," I said.
"Please hold all services pending my written confirmation."
The second call was to the catering company.
The third was to the florist.
By 12:24, every vendor had been notified.
At 12:31, Julian called me.
I let it ring.
Then Mom called.
I answered.
"What did you do?" she whispered.
"The same thing Dad taught me," I said.
"I protected what belongs to me."
She went quiet for a long moment.
Then she said something I never expected.
"Julian told us you were stealing from the company.
That's why we cut you out.
He showed your father documents."
I stopped breathing.
"What documents?"
