Chapter 2: One Word, and the Walls Started Shaking

That single word — "Fine." — sent Julian into a panic.
Within four minutes, my phone was ringing.
I let it go to voicemail.
He called again.
Then Mom called.
Then Dad.
I sat in that boardroom and watched my phone light up like a switchboard while my supervisor kept talking about quarterly targets.
I did not answer a single one.
That evening, Julian showed up at my apartment.
I opened the door.
"You need to cancel whatever you're thinking," he said.
"Today is supposed to be the happiest day of my life."
"It is," I said.
"Mine too."
He stared at me.
"What does that mean?"
I held up my phone and showed him the vendor contracts.
Every single one had my name as the primary account holder.
Not the venue's client.
Not a co-signer.
The sole responsible party.
Which also meant I was the only one who could cancel them.
Julian's face changed.
"You wouldn't."
I didn't answer.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down.
I watched the color leave his face completely.
It was a message from Cedar Grove Estate.
He looked up at me slowly.
"What did you do?"
I picked up my keys.
"I told you.
Fine."
What I hadn't told him was that I had made one more call that morning — not to the vendors.
To someone Julian had never expected me to contact.
