She stood there dripping on my floor, still staring at the door like she expected someone to follow her.
"Mom.
Talk to me."
She finally sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
"Megan said I was making the house feel crowded."
I waited.
"She said the kids needed their routines back.
That having me there was…
disrupting things."
"You were cooking their meals and doing their laundry."
Mom looked at her hands.
"Scott was there when she said it?"
She nodded slowly.
"What did he do?"
She didn't answer right away.
"He said maybe it was time to think about other options."
I felt something go cold in my chest.
"Other options.
His exact words?"
"He had a brochure, sweetheart." Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
"He already had a brochure.
On the kitchen table.
Like he'd been waiting for the right moment."
A care facility brochure.
Sitting on the table where she'd been cooking their dinners and folding their clothes for three weeks.
I couldn't speak.
Then my phone buzzed.
It was Scott.
And the text said: *"Has Mom contacted you?
Don't let her make this into something it isn't.
There's a lot you don't know."*
A lot I don't know.
I set the phone face-down and looked at my mother.
She was watching me with an expression I hadn't seen on her face since we were children.
She was afraid.
