Chapter 2: He Practiced

Part 2 ⬇️
The photographer listened to everything.
When I finished, she didn't say "are you sure?" She just said, "That's the most beautiful instruction I've ever been given."
I went to the wedding with one rule for myself: stay calm, let the day happen, and trust what I'd set up.
Nathan wore Dad's cufflinks.
He didn't tell me until we were standing at the back of the church.
He pulled back his sleeve and showed me, and I had to look at the ceiling for a full ten seconds.
Then the doors opened.
He offered me his arm the way he'd practiced — formal, steady, proud.
We walked every single step together.
At the reception, Daniel's mother was pleasant.
Smiled for the group photos.
Said the flowers were lovely.
She didn't know yet.
Three weeks later, the wedding album arrived.
I was there when she opened it at Daniel's parents' house.
She turned the first page — and stopped.
The lead photo.
Full page.
Nathan and me at the back of the church, right before the doors opened.
His arm in mine.
His face.
She turned to the next page.
Nathan and me mid-aisle.
Then again at the altar handoff.
Then framed beside Daniel and me at the front.
She looked up at me slowly.
"You planned this."
I smiled.
"He practiced."
She opened her mouth — and that's when Daniel's aunt leaned over from across the table and said quietly, "I have to tell you both something.
About what she said to me before the wedding."
