Chapter 2: She Raised Her Phone

Part 2 ⬇️
Maria didn't say a word at first.
She just stood there with her phone up, camera facing him, and waited.
He looked at it.
Then at her.
Then back at me.
"What are you doing?"
"Recording," she said.
"Keep going.
You were saying something about covering herself?"
His face changed.
Not embarrassed — annoyed.
Like he was the one being treated unfairly.
"This is a public place.
There are children here."
"There are," Maria said.
"And their mothers feed them.
Sit down somewhere."
I still hadn't moved.
I was still holding both sides of my flannel, arms out, like I'd forgotten how to close them.
Maria glanced at me once — just once — and something in her face said *I've got you.
Stay still.*
"You need to put that phone away," he said.
"Or what?"
He stepped toward her.
Not close enough to touch — but close enough to mean something.
That's when the woman from the bakery walked up the aisle.
She was older.
Sixties, maybe.
She stopped two feet away and looked at him.
"I heard you from over there," she said quietly.
"Every word."
He turned.
And for the first time, he didn't say anything.
But what happened next — what he said when he realized there were three of us — I wasn't ready for it.

What he said next left everyone in that aisle completely silent.
