Chapter 2: What Rosie Knew and Could Not Keep

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the paper.

It was a letter.

Handwritten.

In Rosie's handwriting.

*"If you're reading this, it means I didn't make it.

And it means Ben finally kept his promise."*

I looked up at him.

"She wrote this herself?"

"Six months ago," he said.

"She made me swear I'd give it to you if anything happened."

I kept reading.

*"I need you to know the truth about why Ben married me.

Not the version people assume.

The real one."*

My throat tightened.

Then I reached the part that made me scream.

Rosie had known something.

Something about our family.

Something she had been carrying alone for years — and she had trusted Ben with it before she ever trusted me.

"How long have you known?" I whispered.

Ben closed his eyes.

"Since before the wedding."

"And you never told me?"

"She made me promise, just like she made me promise this."

I stepped back.

My back hit the wall.

"Ben.

What did she know?"

He looked toward the surgery doors.

His jaw tightened.

"She found out what really happened to your father."

The floor felt like it shifted under my feet.
