Chapter 2: The Recording

The judge called the hearing to order.
Denise sat across from me, perfectly composed.
Her lawyer had a thick folder.
Mine was a single manila envelope I'd pulled from under my bed that morning.
"Your Honor," Denise's lawyer began, "my client is a married homeowner with stable income and years of parenting experience.
The minor would thrive in her care.
The current guardian is a nineteen-year-old working two jobs who can barely keep the lights on."
A few people in the gallery nodded.
Even the judge's expression was hard to read.
Then it was my turn.
I stood up and placed a small digital recorder on the table.
"Your Honor, I'd like to submit an audio recording made yesterday afternoon."
Denise's smile didn't move — until the sound filled the room.
*"The sooner we get guardianship and ship that girl off to boarding school, the better.
I can't stand having her here."*
*"Think about all the money we'll get.
Once it's ours, we'll never have to work another day."*
The gallery went silent.
Howard grabbed Denise's arm.
Her face had gone completely white.
"That recording is inadmissible—" her lawyer started.
But the judge raised one hand.
"I'll decide what's admissible in my courtroom."
He looked directly at Denise.
"Ma'am.
Is that your voice?"
Denise opened her mouth.
Then closed it again.
And that was when the door to the courtroom opened — and someone walked in that nobody expected to see.
