Chapter 2: What Was Written on the Back

I held it up so she could see it clearly.
It was a photograph.
Old.
Slightly creased at one corner.
My son — maybe three years old in the picture — sitting on the lap of a man I did not recognise.
And written on the back in her handwriting, a date, a name, and three words I had not been able to stop reading since my attorney handed it to me.
*He is his.*
She did not deny it.
That was the thing.
She just stood very still and looked at the photograph the way you look at something you buried a long time ago and never expected to see again.
"How long?" I asked.
She said nothing.
"How long has he known?"
She looked at the floor.
"It's complicated."
"He is ten years old," I said.
"He just asked you for a piece of bread."
One of the younger ones started to cry at the table.
She moved toward them automatically, the way she always does, and I stepped in front of her without thinking.
"Don't," I said.
She stopped.
And for the first time in nine years I saw something on her face I had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Fear.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down at the screen.
It was the man from the photograph.
