Chapter 1: The Empty Apartment

My arrogant sister st0le my puppy while I was working, claiming her kids deserved a dog more than a single woman — but the way I taught her a lesson made her completely change her attitude towards me.

I adopted my rescue puppy, Barnaby, six months ago.

Since I live by myself, he quickly became my entire world.

He's not just a dog to me; he's my family.

My older sister, Daphne, has always been entitled.

She has three unruly kids and firmly believes that being a mother makes her rank higher in society.

I made the mistake of handing her a spare key to my apartment for emergencies.

Since I work from home most of the week, Barnaby is hardly ever alone.

But on Tuesday, I had to head into the office for a few hours for a meeting.

All I wanted was to return, hug my dog, and take him to the park.

But when I opened my door, my apartment was completely quiet.

His crate was open, his leash was missing, and his toys were gone.

My heart sank.

I was panicking, about to call the police, when my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Daphne, with a picture of her kids holding Barnaby in her backyard.

"Picked up the dog," she texted.

"The boys have been begging for a pet, and they deserve a dog way more than someone who lives alone.

We're keeping him."

I called her right away.

She answered on the second ring, sounding completely bored.

"Daphne, bring my dog back right now," I said, my voice shaking.

"Oh, calm down," she sighed.

"You're just a single woman, you don't need a family dog.

The boys are already attached to him.

Be a good aunt for once and just let them have this.

Don't make a scene."

She fully expected me to give in to keep the peace.

But honestly, I was completely exhausted by her endless entitlement and the way she always let her kids just take whatever they wanted from me.

I didn't argue, and I didn't try to reason with her.

I simply hung up the phone, got straight into my car, and drove directly to her house.

I fully planned to just grab his leash and walk out, but when I pushed open her backyard gate and saw what was happening around my terrified dog, I saw red.

I didn't scream or throw a tantrum, but what I calmly did next right there on her patio made Daphne drop her coffee mug and turn completely pale.
