Chapter 2: The Note He Was Never Supposed to Give Me

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️
---
The officer who had run back inside was breathing hard.
He said something into his radio I couldn't fully hear.
Then he looked at me.
"Ma'am, I need you to take your son to the back of the house right now."
"Why?
What did you see?"
He didn't answer.
He just stepped in front of us.
I pulled Ethan down the hallway, my hands shaking.
"Mom, you're hurting my arm."
"I know, baby.
I'm sorry."
I locked us in the bedroom.
That's when Ethan said something that stopped my heart.
"Mom…
the man from school told me not to tell you."
"Tell me what?"
He looked down at his shoes.
"He said he was watching us.
To make sure we were safe."
"Safe from what, Ethan?"
He didn't answer.
But he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"He gave me this.
He said give it to you if anything felt wrong."
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely open it.
Inside was a single line, handwritten:
*"Your husband didn't d*e in that accident.
And they know you're starting to ask questions."*
I couldn't breathe.
Someone knocked hard on the bedroom door.
It wasn't the police.

What's on the other side of that door — and what really happened to Ethan's father?
