Chapter 2: The Camera They Forgot

I let Pauline finish.
Then I said, very quietly, "Thank you for calling, Pauline."
She laughed.
Actually laughed.
I hung up and sat there for a long moment, watching Maya sleep.
Her left arm was elevated in a soft cast.
Her fingers — the two crushed ones — were taped together in a small white bundle.
She was nine years old.
I made three phone calls that night.
The first was to my JAG contact at Fort Bliss.
The second was to a federal investigator I had worked alongside during a joint operation two years earlier.
His name was Agent Darnell Cross.
He owed me nothing — but he answered on the second ring.
The third call was the one that changed everything.
It was to the hospital's head of security.
Because Dr.
Karina Sterling had mentioned something quietly before she left the ward that evening — something she hadn't put in the official report yet.
"The garage had a camera," she said.
"An old one.
The family didn't know it was still recording."
I stood up slowly.
"Where is the footage now?"
Dr.
Sterling looked at me steadily.
"That's the problem, Mark.
Someone from the Vance estate called the hospital administrator this morning.
By this afternoon, the security office received a request to hand over all external footage from that weekend."
She paused.
"They haven't collected it yet."
