Chapter 2: What Hannah Knew

Inside the lunchbox was a photograph.

Noah's school photo — the one from this year — with his name, our address, and the words "Good kids deserve to be watched over" written on the back in red marker.

My hands were shaking.

"Noah, go inside.

Right now."

He didn't argue.

I called the police.

Two officers arrived within twenty minutes and walked the lawn, checking each lunchbox one by one.

Every single one was packed — sandwiches, fruit, snacks, juice boxes.

Fifty lunchboxes.

Fifty full lunches.

All neatly prepared.

One officer crouched beside the metal lunchbox and looked up at me.

"Ma'am, does your son know anyone who might have done this?"

"He's eight years old."

"Someone knew his school photo.

Someone knew this address.

Someone knew what he did for that little girl."

I hadn't told anyone outside the family.

Hannah hadn't posted anything online.

The party was just us and a few neighbors.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

*"He reminded us that kindness still exists.

We just wanted him to know he'll never go hungry again.

— The Lunchbox Parents"*

I read it twice.

Then Hannah appeared at my gate, Lucy on her hip, both of them still in pajamas.

Hannah's face was white.

"There's something you need to know," she said quietly.

"About who organized this.

And why they used that photograph."

She looked down at Lucy, then back at me.

"It's not what you think."
