Chapter 2: The Name on the Care Schedule

Inside the briefcase were medical supplies.

Syringes, pill organizers, a folded care schedule with someone's name at the top.

A little boy's name.

Mom's hands were shaking.

"Richard has a son," Chloe said quietly.

"A sick little boy.

I followed him to a house three streets south.

I watched him go inside.

I could see through the window."

She wiped her face.

"There was a woman there too.

She looked exhausted.

She handed the boy to Richard the second he walked in the door."

Mom sat down slowly.

"He never told me."

"Grandma, the boy looked about four years old.

And the care schedule…" Chloe pointed to the paper still inside the briefcase.

"It's in Richard's handwriting.

Every single night.

Seven-thirty without fail."

I looked at Mom.

She wasn't crying.

She was completely still.

Then her phone buzzed on the table.

A message from Richard.

She turned the screen so we could see it.

*"I'm sorry I keep leaving.

I've been trying to find the right moment to tell you something.

Tonight I ran out of time again.

Please don't give up on me."*

Mom stared at the message for a long moment.

Then she looked at Chloe.

"You said that's not even the worst part."

Chloe nodded slowly.

"The woman in that house, Grandma…"

She stopped.

"I recognized her."

What Chloe said next left Mom completely speechless.
