Chapter 2: Someone Came a Long Way

I shook my head.
"No," I said quietly.
"He thinks we're just fishing."
The captain looked back at my dad, who was standing near the dock railing, running his hand along the wood and smiling to himself like he was already somewhere else — somewhere thirty years ago.
The captain cleared his throat.
"We've been getting calls about this for two weeks.
People heard what you were doing.

"Some of them came a long way."
I didn't fully understand what he meant until I looked past him.

I laughed, but my chest was tight.
Then one of the people near the dock took a step forward.
An older man.
He looked at my father for a long moment, then looked at me.
"Is that really him?" he asked.
Before I could answer, my dad's smile slowly disappeared.
He had seen the man's face.
And something in his expression told me he recognized him — from a long time ago.
