Chapter 2: The Woman at the Door

A silver-haired woman stood beside Mom’s surgeon.

She was clutching a photograph identical to the one in Dad’s shoebox.

“Brad,” she said.

“You promised you would tell her.”

Dad rushed downstairs.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Mom appeared behind us, gripping the banister.

“Tell me what?”

The surgeon looked at Dad.

“I called because we found evidence of an earlier operation.

Your medical records say you never had one.”

Mom’s face drained of color.

“That’s impossible.”

“We also found a tiny surgical marker,” he continued.

“It carried a hospital name, a date from 1978…and another patient’s initials.”

Dad tried to close the shoebox, but Mom snatched the photograph first.

It showed Dad as a young man standing between two nearly identical women.

Mom stared at the stranger on our doorstep.

“Who are you?”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Turn the photograph over.”

Mom did.

A name and date were written across the back.

Her hands began shaking.

Dad reached for her.

“Please let me explain.”

She pulled away.

The stranger pointed to the name.

“You removed the mirrors because you knew what the surgeon would uncover, didn’t you, Brad?”

Mom looked from the photograph to Dad.

Then the woman whispered, “And you’ve been calling her by the wrong name for forty-six years.”
