Chapter 1: The Baby Daddy Picked

My 4-year-old was excited to meet her new baby brother — but the moment I put him in her arms, she frowned and said, "That's not the baby Daddy picked."

My husband, Owen, and I were absolutely thrilled when we found out I was pregnant with our second child.

Our four-year-old daughter, Chloe, was the most excited of all.

For nine months, she talked to my growing belly, carefully picked out little plush toys for his crib, and constantly asked how many days were left until her little brother would finally come home.

My pregnancy had been completely normal, but after a long labor, complications suddenly arose and the doctors rushed me in for an emergency C-section.

I had to be put under general anesthesia.

The last thing I remember was Owen squeezing my hand and promising everything would be okay.

When I woke up in recovery, Owen was seated beside my bed, rocking a tiny bundle wrapped in a striped hospital blanket.

He looked exhausted, which I assumed was only natural after everything that had happened.

A few hours later, my mom brought Chloe into the hospital room so she could finally meet her new sibling.

Chloe's eyes lit up as she ran over to the bed.

I carefully shifted and gently lowered the sleeping newborn into her waiting arms.

I expected her to giggle or kiss his little forehead.

Instead, Chloe stared down at the baby's face, her smile slowly fading into a confused frown.

She glanced up at me, then pointed a tiny finger at Owen, who had suddenly gone completely still in the corner of the room.

"Mommy," Chloe whispered, sounding genuinely confused.

"That's not the baby Daddy picked."
