Chapter 2: What She Saw

Rick didn't answer.

He just stood there, staring at the floor, his hands pressed flat against his sides like he was trying to hold himself together.

"Rick." My voice came out harder than I expected.

"Look at me."

He looked up.

And I saw it — not guilt exactly, but something close to it.

Something he had been carrying for a long time.

Anna stepped inside.

She didn't look at me.

She kept her eyes locked on Rick.

"Tell her," she said quietly.

"Or I will."

"Anna, you don't understand what you saw—"

"I know exactly what I saw."

The room went completely still.

I looked at my daughter — her shaking hands, the weight she had clearly lost, the way she couldn't stop watching him like she was afraid to turn her back.

"What did she see, Rick?"

He opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

Then Anna reached into her jacket and pulled out her phone.

Her hands were trembling as she found what she was looking for.

She turned the screen toward me.

I didn't understand it at first.

Then I did.

And the floor felt like it dropped out from under me.

"How long?" I whispered.

Rick said nothing.

Anna's voice broke.

"Mom, that's not even the worst part."

What was on that phone — and what is the worst part Anna hasn't said yet?
