Chapter 2: You Weren't Supposed to Find That

The messages had been sent by Caleb.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
I read them again.
And again.
*"I did everything you asked me to do."*
*"Did our plan work?"*
Caleb had written those words.
Caleb — the boy who had sat at my kitchen table.
The boy who had looked me in the eye at the funeral and said he was sorry.
I called him immediately.
He picked up on the second ring.
"Mrs.
Hartley—"
"What plan, Caleb?" My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"What did my son do for you?"
Silence.
Then: "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I have Jeremy's phone.
I read everything."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
"You weren't supposed to find that."
I couldn't breathe.
"What did you ask him to do?" I said.
"Tell me right now."
But before he could answer, I heard another voice in the background.
A man's voice.
Low and sharp.
"Hang up.
Right now."
The line went d*ad.
I stood there staring at the phone in my hand.
Jeremy had known something.
Something serious enough that someone needed it buried.
And now I was starting to wonder — was that accident really an accident at all?
