Chapter 2: The Notebook With Names I Didn't Know

Part 2 ⬇️

Evan was on the floor near the back exit, his knuckles scraped and his shirt torn at the collar.

A older man I didn't recognize was pressed against the wall, breathing hard, eyes wide.

The boss stepped between them.

"This is the third time," he said, looking straight at me.

"Third time your son has done this."

"Done what?" My voice came out barely above a whisper.

Evan looked up at me.

His eyes were red, but he wasn't crying.

He looked...

ashamed.

And something else.

Desperate.

"Mom, I can explain—"

"Let me," the boss said quietly.

He reached behind the counter and pulled out a small notebook.

He set it on the table between us.

I looked down.

It was filled with names, dates, and dollar amounts.

Evan's handwriting.

"Every paycheck," the boss said.

"Every single one.

He never kept a dollar for himself."

I stared at the list.

Some names I didn't know.

But one near the top stopped my breath.

It was a name I hadn't heard in three years.

The older man against the wall finally spoke.

"Your son has been taking care of someone," he said.

"Someone you don't know about."

Evan grabbed my hand.

"Mom...

please don't be angry.

I didn't know how to tell you."
