Chapter 2: The Letter Between Two Girls

Letty was sitting in the corner of the principal's office, her eyes red and swollen.
Beside her sat Millie — wearing the wig.
But Millie wasn't crying.
She was holding Letty's hand.
Between them on the desk was a folded piece of paper.
The principal picked it up and handed it to me without a word.
It was a letter.
Written in a child's handwriting.
*"Dear Letty's mom.
I know what it's like to lose someone.
My mom didn't make it last year.
When Letty gave me this, I felt like someone still cared.
Please don't be angry at her.
She saved me today."*
I couldn't breathe.
The principal cleared his throat.
"That's not why I called you."
I looked up.
His expression had shifted.
Harder now.
Uncomfortable.
"One of the other parents filed a complaint this morning.
They're saying Letty's actions were…
inappropriate.
That she made their daughter feel bad for not doing the same."
I stared at him.
"You called me here because of a complaint?"
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
"There's going to be a meeting.
Tomorrow.
That parent is demanding Letty be formally reprimanded."
Letty's hand tightened around Millie's.

She didn't say a word.
But Millie looked straight at me — and what she said next stopped the entire room cold.
