Chapter 2: The Recovery Smile

Richard's face cycled through three expressions in under five seconds — shock, calculation, then a smile I recognized immediately.
The recovery smile.
The one he used in courtrooms before our divorce.
The one that meant he was already working an angle.
"Chief Judge." He said it slowly, like he was tasting something sour.
"Well.
That's a surprise."
"Is it?" I said.
He straightened his jacket.
"It doesn't change anything, Elena.
You know that.
One phone call from my attorney and this whole thing disappears.
Workplace politics.
Jurisdictional conflict.
You'd have to recuse yourself from anything involving my family."
He wasn't wrong that he'd try.
But he was wrong that it would work.
The principal finally found her voice.
"Mr.
Sterling, I think we should—"
"Sit down," Richard said.
He didn't even look at her.
She sat down.
That was when my phone buzzed on the desk.
I turned it over.
A message from my clerk.
Four words.
*Footage secured.
All three cameras.*
I looked up at Richard.
"You were saying something about phone calls?"
His attorney's name was already on his lips.
I could see it forming.
But then Max did something none of us expected.
The boy's game slipped from his hands and hit the floor.
And in a voice much smaller than before, he said one word.
"Dad."
Not defiant.
Not proud.
Afraid.
