Chapter 2: Since Before You Told Me

"Not yet," she said.
"Not in front of everyone."
I looked at her.
Her eyes were clear.
Whatever the journey had cost her, she was fully present in that moment.
"This is between you and me," she said.
"And her.
When things quiet down."
So I waited.
The cake came out.
My daughter put both fists into the icing and the whole garden laughed.
Grandma watched from her chair with an expression I'd never seen on her before.
Not just happy.
Settled.
Like something had finally been put right.
When the last guests were saying their goodbyes, I crouched beside her again.
She nodded at the bag.
I lifted it into my lap and pulled back the tissue paper.
Inside was a dress.
Small.
Carefully folded.
Ivory cotton with tiny blue flowers at the collar.
I recognized it before I understood why.
Then it hit me.
It was the dress.
The one from the photograph.
The one she had made.
The one I was wearing on her front step at four years old.
She had made another one.
By hand.
With those same hands that could barely hold a cup.
"How long did this take you?" I whispered.
She just looked at me.
"Grandma.
How long?"
"Since before you told me," she said quietly.
"I started it when I decided to believe you'd get there."
My throat closed completely.
Then my uncle appeared behind her chair, and his face was wrong.
---
What did my uncle know?
May you like
And what was he about to say that changed everything?
