Chapter 2: The Note Inside the Case

I sat down slowly.
My heart was pounding.
The officer looked at Ariel, then back at me.
"Mrs.
Grunwald came to the station this morning," he said.
"She was very upset.
She told us a 10-year-old girl had given her a large amount of cash — and she was convinced the child had st0len it."
I blinked.
"What?"
"She didn't want Ariel to get in trouble on her behalf.
She came to us first, to make sure the money was accounted for."
I turned to Ariel.
She was staring at her shoes.
"Ariel," I said quietly.
"How much did you give her?"
She whispered, "Everything I saved.
Eighty-three dollars."
The room went completely silent.
Mrs.
Grunwald stepped forward.
Her new glasses were on her face.
Her hands were shaking.
"I thought no child could have that kind of money unless something was wrong," she said, her voice breaking.
"I didn't want her to suffer because of me."
I couldn't speak.
Then the officer leaned forward and placed something on the table.
A folded piece of paper.
"We found this tucked inside the glasses case," he said.
"Did you write this, Ariel?"
Ariel nodded, barely breathing.
The officer unfolded it slowly — and what was written inside made Mrs.
Grunwald cover her mouth and start to cry.
