Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper
Aunt Lisa pulled the tape from Sarah's mouth herself.
Sarah gasped.
Then she looked straight at Richard.
"Tell them," she said.
"Tell them what you did."
Richard didn't move.
His face had gone completely still.
"She's confused," he said quietly.
"She's been through something traumatic."
"You put me there." Sarah's voice didn't shake.
"You locked that door from the outside.
You told Ethan I left him."
Ethan was still holding her hand.
He hadn't let go since the moment she came out.
One of the uncles stood up slowly.
"Richard.
What is she saying?"
Richard looked around the room — at the faces, at the broken rack, at the service door still hanging open.
"This isn't what it looks like."
"Then what does it look like?" Lisa asked.
Nobody answered him.
That's when Sarah reached into the pocket of her cardigan with her still-shaking hands and held up a small folded paper.
"I had this with me the whole time.
I wrote it the first night."
Ethan took it and opened it.
His face changed.
"Mom…
who is Margaret?"
Sarah looked at Richard.
Richard finally looked away.
