Chapter 2: What the Police Never Told You

Part 2 ⬇️
Amara's voice was barely a breath against my ear.
"Mommy said your little girl is why she came here."
I didn't move.
Neither did anyone else in that room.
Then I turned to Grace — slowly, the way I turn when I want someone to understand they have exactly one chance to tell me the truth.
Her eyes were already filling.
"Mr.
Hale—"
"How do you know about my daughter?"
She pressed her lips together.
Her hands were shaking at her sides.
"Grace."
"Because I was there," she whispered.
"The night it happened.
I was there."
One of my guards stepped forward.
I raised one finger and he stopped.
"Where," I said.
Not a question.
Grace reached into her apron pocket.
She pulled out a small photograph and placed it on the table beside my plate.
I looked down.
My daughter.
My wife.
And a woman standing just behind them — younger, different hair — but the same eyes looking back at me now.
"I've been trying to find the right moment," Grace said.
"For two years."
Amara was still sitting beside me, quietly holding her dinner roll, watching us both.
"There's something else," Grace said.
"Something about that night that the police never told you."
