Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Back
My legs stopped working.
I grabbed the bed rail to keep from falling.
"That's not possible," I whispered.
"I identified his body.
I planned the funeral.
I watched them lower that coffin into the ground."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
He was weak — barely conscious — but his eyes were sharp and steady.
"The man in that coffin was not David Winters."
One of the guards stepped forward.
"Boss.
You need to rest.
The doctors said—"
"Get out."
Nobody moved.
"I said get out."
They filed out slowly, all except one — a younger man near the door who hadn't taken his eyes off Logan since Alessandro woke up.
Something about the way he was staring made my skin go cold.
Alessandro pressed the ring into my hand.
"David gave me this eighteen months ago.
He said if anything happened to him, I should find you."
"Why would my husband know you?"
Alessandro looked at Logan.
Something crossed his face — not pity.
Something heavier than that.
"Because David was the one who warned me about the ambush tonight."
My throat closed.
"Then where is he?"
Alessandro opened his mouth.
The young guard by the door spoke first.
"Mrs.
Winters," he said quietly.
"My name is Daniel.
David sent me."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph.
It showed David — alive — standing outside a building I had never seen.
The date printed in the corner was three weeks ago.
