Chapter 1: The Moment She Stopped Being a Guest

Maya had been living with us for two years when the $50 went missing from Tara's purse.
I wasn't home when it happened.
I'd left for a supply run around noon and came back to find Tara standing in the living room with her wallet in her hand, Maya across from her, already crying.
"Marcus, I want your daughter out of this house."
"What?
Why?"
"$50 is missing from my purse.
You were gone.
She was the only other person here."
I looked at Maya.
She was fifteen, she'd been part of this family since she was thirteen, and in two years I had never once caught her in a lie.
"I didn't take your money," she said.
Tara didn't budge.
"Then where is it?"
I walked over and stood next to Maya, not in front of her, next to her.
"Tara.
Being here doesn't prove she took it."
"Then where is my money?"
"I don't know yet." I kept my voice steady.
"But we're going to find out before we accuse my daughter of anything."
Maya looked up at me, and there was something in her face I hadn't seen before — not just relief, but disbelief, like she genuinely hadn't expected anyone to take her side first and ask questions second.
"You believe me?"
I placed my hand on her shoulder.
"I believe you deserve to be heard."

Tara's jaw tightened, but she didn't say anything else.
She just stood there holding her wallet, waiting for someone to prove her right.
