The chain hit the floor with a crash.
Officer Davis stepped inside first, then Marcus rushed past him and pulled Claire into his arms.
She was shaking, her lips pale, her eyes red from crying.
"How long?" Marcus asked, his voice breaking.
"How long were you in there?"
"Since last night," Claire whispered.
Marcus turned around slowly.
Julian stood near the stairs, arms crossed, wearing a small smile that made everyone in the room go cold.
"She's dramatic," Julian said.
"She went in there herself."
Lily grabbed her uncle's sleeve.
"He put the lock on, Uncle Marcus.
I saw him.
I tried to tell Mommy but he sent me to my room."
Julian's smile disappeared.
Officer Davis stepped toward him.
"Sir, we'll need you to come with us."
"This is my house," Julian said.
"Everything here is mine."
Claire straightened up slowly.
Her voice was quiet but steady.
"Not for much longer."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"You have nothing, Claire.
Nothing."
She reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small folded envelope.
Her hand didn't shake at all.
"I found this before you locked the door," she said.
"You should have checked my pockets first."
Julian's face went white.
