Chapter 1: The Smartest Thing He Ever Did

Marcus's smug smile disappeared the moment he realized my "new life" wasn't just a successful career or a happy marriage—my little girl had just called Julian Rhodes "Dad," and Julian's company was days away from taking everything Marcus owned.
Five years after our divorce, my ex-husband cornered me at my cousin's wedding with the woman who had destroyed our marriage hanging on his arm.
"Leaving you was the smartest thing I ever did," Marcus said with a smug smile, but thirty seconds later, a four-year-old girl raced across the ballroom screaming, "Mommy!
Dad and I have been looking everywhere for you!" What happened next wiped that smile off his face.
Until that moment, I'd been doing a pretty good job pretending Marcus Mercer didn't exist.
The reception glittered beneath crystal chandeliers at an elegant hotel outside Boston, and I'd promised myself nothing would ruin this night for my cousin.
Then I heard that laugh behind me.
My stomach tightened before I even turned around.
Marcus looked almost exactly as I remembered him, wearing a perfectly tailored tuxedo, an expensive watch, and the same confidence that had once made me feel small inside my own marriage.
Beside him stood Chloe Vance.
Five years earlier, I'd stepped into my kitchen and found Chloe barefoot, wearing my husband's shirt.
Now she was clinging to Marcus's arm like she'd won something.
"Well," Chloe said, letting her eyes move slowly over me.
"Look who survived."
"Good evening, Chloe," I replied.
Marcus glanced at my simple navy dress and gave a quiet laugh.
"I heard you disappeared after the divorce."
"I moved."
"Same difference."
Chloe placed one hand possessively against his chest.
"Marcus was worried you'd never recover."
The cruelty in her voice should have hurt, but something inside me had changed during those five years.
They were still trying to humiliate the woman I used to be, and neither of them realized she no longer existed.
During our marriage, Marcus controlled our finances while I quietly built my career as a compliance attorney.
When I discovered his affair, he emptied our joint account before filing for divorce because he believed heartbreak would leave me too weak to fight him.
I didn't fight.
I walked away with my professional licenses, my reputation, and one encrypted drive containing copies of financial records Marcus never knew I had seen.
Sometimes walking away isn't surrender, because sometimes you're simply giving someone enough rope to expose himself.
Marcus stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"You know what's funny, Evelyn?
Chloe and I bought a house in Weston.
My company is expanding.
Everything worked out perfectly."
"I'm glad," I said.
That answer bothered him more than anger would have.
His jaw tightened, and I realized he had been waiting five years to see regret in my eyes.
Then he finally delivered the sentence he'd apparently rehearsed.
"Leaving you was the smartest thing I ever did."
Chloe laughed beside him, but before I could respond, the rapid tapping of little shoes echoed across the marble floor.
"Mommy!"
A four-year-old girl with dark curls came racing through the guests and launched herself straight into my arms.
I caught her against my chest as she giggled and wrapped both arms around my neck.
"Emma, slow down," I whispered, laughing.
"Dad and I have been looking everywhere for you!"
Something shifted in the air.
Marcus stared at Emma, then at me, his smug expression slowly disappearing.
His eyes suddenly moved past my shoulder, and whatever color remained in his face vanished.
A tall man was walking toward us, carrying Emma's tiny silver shoes in one hand.
"Marcus..." Chloe whispered.
He didn't answer her.
Everyone in Boston finance knew the man approaching us.
Julian Rhodes was the founder and CEO of Rhodes Capital, and his investment firm was currently negotiating to acquire Marcus's company.
Julian reached me, slipped an arm gently around my waist, kissed my temple, and smiled.
"There you are."
Marcus's champagne glass trembled between his fingers.
"Evelyn," he whispered.
"You're married to Julian Rhodes?"
Holding Emma against my hip, I looked directly into the eyes of the man who had once told me I would be nothing without him.
"Yes."
Then Julian looked at Marcus, and the warmth disappeared from his expression.
