Chapter 9: What Vanessa Said Out Loud

They sat at the kitchen table — the same table, the same two chairs.

Elijah was at school.

Zoe was at her preschool.

The house was quiet in a way that felt deliberate, like a room that had been cleared for something difficult.

Vanessa had dark circles under her eyes.

She was holding a mug of coffee she hadn't drunk from.

"I'm not going to make excuses," she said.

"Good."

"But I want you to understand what happened.

Not so you'll forgive me.

Just so you know the truth."

Marcus waited.

"Daniel and I were together for two years before I met you.

It ended badly.

He didn't want it to end." She turned the mug in her hands.

"When I found out I was pregnant, I did a private paternity test.

It came back as Daniel's.

But by then I was already in love with you, and I told myself — I told myself that you would be a better father.

That it was better for her.

That Daniel would never know."

"But he found out."

"His mother.

I don't know how.

I think he hired someone." She set the mug down.

"Patricia came to me when Zoe was two.

She said Daniel knew.

She said he wanted access.

I panicked.

I offered her money to keep him away.

She took it."

"And then he found out about the payments."

Vanessa looked up.

"How do you know about that?"

Marcus said nothing.

She looked back at the table.

"He called me eight months ago.

He said if I didn't agree to the custody filing, he would go to court anyway and tell them I had been paying his mother to conceal his paternity.

He said it would look like I had committed fraud.

That I could lose both children." Her voice dropped.

"I believed him."

"So you agreed."

"I didn't know what else to do."

"You could have told me." Marcus kept his voice even.

"That was the choice you had.

You could have told me the truth and we could have faced it together.

Instead you built a second safe and moved sixty thousand dollars and got our daughter a passport under another man's name."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

She didn't look away.

"I know," she said.

"You told my son that something bad would happen to this family if he told me what he'd seen."

"I was scared."

"He's eight years old, Vanessa.

He's been carrying your secret for months because you put it on him." Marcus leaned forward.

"That is the part I cannot move past.

Not Daniel Holt.

Not the money.

What you did to Elijah."

A tear ran down her face.

She didn't wipe it.

"I know," she said again.

It came out differently this time.

Smaller.

They sat in silence for a moment.

"The passport," Marcus said.

"Whose idea was that?"

"Daniel's attorney suggested it.

Daniel told me it was just a precaution.

In case the court ruled in his favor and he wanted to travel with her." She shook her head.

"I knew it was wrong.

I signed it anyway."

"Diane has referred it to the DA."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I'm not going to fight you for Elijah," she said quietly.

"Whatever happens with Zoe — I'm not going to fight you for him.

He should be with you."

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

"What do you want, Vanessa?

Not what Daniel wants.

Not what Patricia wants.

What do you want?"

She opened her eyes.

"I want Zoe to be safe," she said.

"I want her to stay with you.

I don't want Daniel raising her." She paused.

"I know I don't get to decide that anymore.

I know I gave that up." She picked up the mug finally and held it with both hands.

"I just wanted you to know that's what I want.

Even now."

Marcus stood.

"My attorney will be in contact with yours," he said.

May you like

He walked out of the kitchen.

Behind him, Vanessa sat alone at the table, holding a mug of cold coffee, and said nothing more.
