Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Counter

— PART 2 —

Vincent didn't sleep.

He sat in the dark of his study until he heard the kitchen door open at 5:28.

Two minutes early.

Carmen was always two minutes early.

He walked downstairs without making a sound.

She was already at the sink, her back to him, still wearing her coat.

Her shoulders were thinner than he remembered.

Her cough came once, quietly, like she was trying to swallow it before anyone could hear.

Vincent set a manila envelope on the counter.

Carmen turned.

She saw him standing there and immediately looked at the floor.

"Mr.

Torino.

I'm sorry — I didn't know you were awake.

I'll start breakfast right away."

"Sit down, Carmen."

She didn't move.

"Please," he said.

That word made her look up.

He had never said please to her.

Not once in four years.

She sat.

He pushed the envelope toward her.

Inside was a letter from his personal physician, a prepaid medical account, and a number with more zeros than Carmen had seen in her life.

"Your daughter was here last night," he said.

Carmen's face went white.

"She wasn't stealing," he said quickly.

"She was hungry."

The silence that followed was the worst kind — the kind that confirmed everything.

Carmen's hands pressed flat against the table.

Her jaw tightened.

Her eyes filled, but she refused to let a single tear fall in front of him.

"She told me about the medicine," Vincent said.

Carmen stood up so fast the chair scraped back.

"I don't need your charity, Mr.

Torino."

"I know."

"We manage fine."

"I know you believe that."

"Isabella had no right to be here.

I'll deal with her myself.

I'm sorry for the trouble." Her voice cracked on the last word.

Vincent didn't move.

"The account is already open," he said.

"The doctor expects you Monday."

Carmen stared at the envelope like it was something dangerous.

And then, from the hallway, came a small voice.

"Mama?"

They both turned.

Isabella stood in the kitchen doorway in her school uniform, her old shoes still on her feet.

She had been there the whole time.
