Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 ⬇️
Detective Ruiz stopped walking.
She turned back slowly.
"Mr.
Preston.
What little bottle?"
Preston's jaw tightened.
"She's four.
She doesn't know what she's talking about."
But Poppy didn't look away from him.
She pressed her rabbit tighter and said it again, quieter this time.
"The little bottle from the kitchen."
Madeline felt something cold move through her chest.
The kitchen.
The warm milk.
The way her legs had stopped working before she even reached the sofa.
"Preston." Her voice came out thin.
"Show her the pocket."
He looked at her then.
For the first time since she'd woken up.
And what she saw in his face wasn't anger.
It was calculation.
"You need to rest," he said.
"You're confused.
You've been through something traumatic."
Detective Ruiz took one step closer.
"Sir, I'm going to need you to—"
Preston's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and something shifted behind his eyes.
He rejected the call.
Two seconds later, it rang again.
Madeline saw the name before he flipped it face-down.
Serena.
