Chapter 2: What the Little Girl Remembered

Detective Ruiz stopped walking.

She turned back slowly, her eyes moving from Poppy to Preston.

"What bottle, sweetheart?" she asked.

Poppy hugged her rabbit tighter.

"The little one.

From the kitchen.

Daddy put it in his pocket when Mommy fell down."

The room went very quiet.

Preston's jaw tightened.

"She's four.

She doesn't understand what she saw."

"Then help me understand," Detective Ruiz said.

Her voice was calm.

Her hand was already open, waiting.

Preston didn't move.

Madeline watched her husband's face — the face she had trusted for eleven years — and saw something she had never seen there before.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Calculation.

"Preston." Her voice came out smaller than she wanted.

"Give her the bottle."

He looked at her then.

For the first time since she had woken up.

And what she saw in his eyes made her chest go cold.

"You need to rest," he said quietly.

"You're confused.

You've been through something traumatic."

Poppy pressed her small hand against Madeline's arm.

"Mommy," she whispered.

"Serena said Daddy would say that."
