Alessandro couldn't move.
His mother — the woman he had mourned, whose grave he had visited every year — was crouched in the corner of his own basement, shaking.
"Mama." His voice broke on the word.
Isabella reached for him, but her eyes kept darting past his shoulder toward Helena.
"She said you would send me away," Isabella whispered.
"She said if I made a sound, you would put me in a home and forget me.
That you never wanted me here."
Alessandro turned slowly.
Helena stood in the doorway, her expression no longer broken — it had reset into something cold and calculating.
"She's confused," Helena said.
"She has been for years.
You know how she gets."
"She's not confused." Alessandro stepped forward.
"She recognized Lily.
She recognized me.
She gave Claire those shoes because she was trying to send a message."
Helena said nothing.
Samuel finally spoke from behind her, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Alessandro…
there are things about the estate you don't fully understand yet."
"Then explain them."
Samuel looked at Helena.
Helena gave the smallest shake of her head.
That was when Alessandro noticed the folder tucked under Samuel's arm — the one with the Moretti family crest stamped on the cover.
The same folder he had been searching for since his father's w*ll went missing three years ago.
