Chapter 2: The Wrong Dates

The doctor set down Brielle's chart and looked directly at Preston.
"Mr.
Hale, according to these records, Brielle's estimated conception date is late March.
Can you confirm where you were during that period?"
Preston's smile disappeared completely.
"What kind of question is that?"
The doctor didn't flinch.
"It's a necessary one.
The dates in this file don't align with what Ms.
Foster indicated on her intake form.
There's a six-week discrepancy."
Brielle's face went pale.
"That's — that's just a paperwork error."
"It isn't," the doctor said quietly.
"I need to be accurate before we continue."
Preston's mother turned slowly toward Brielle.
"What is she saying?"
No one answered.
Preston pulled his hand free from Brielle's grip.
"Brielle." His voice had dropped to almost nothing.
"What did you put on that form?"
She looked away.
That was when Preston's father stepped forward and held up his phone — still recording.
"Son," he said carefully.
"Late March.
You were in Edinburgh for three weeks.
The whole family knew."
The room didn't make a sound.
Brielle stared at the ceiling.
And Preston Hale stood completely still as the celebration he had destroyed his marriage for began to fall apart around him.

What Lena discovered before she boarded that plane — and what Preston found out next — is far more than anyone expected.
