Chapter 2: The Document in the Drawer

I barely slept that night.

I lay in my room listening to the house settle around me, thinking about Garrett's foot lifting off that footrest like it was nothing.

Like he'd been doing it for weeks.

Because he had.

The next morning, I brought him breakfast.

Douglas was already in the hallway.

"How was he last night?" he asked.

Too casually.

"Resting well," I said.

Douglas studied my face for a moment longer than felt normal.

Then he smiled and walked away.

At noon, I overheard Gertrude on the phone in the kitchen.

"She's new.

She doesn't know anything yet.

Just make sure the doctor's report stays the same."

She stopped when she saw me in the doorway.

"Rebecca." Her voice went flat.

"Lunch will be ready at one."

That evening, Garrett asked me to stay after I brought his medication.

"Did anyone speak to you today?"

"Douglas asked how your night was.

Gertrude was on a call."

Something shifted in his expression.

"What did she say?"

I told him exactly what I'd heard.

Garrett was quiet for a long moment.

Then he opened the drawer beside his bed and placed a folded document in my hand.

"This is my company's ownership structure.

Look at the date it was last modified."

I looked.

It was three weeks after his accident.

"Garrett—"

"Someone in this house filed that change," he said quietly.

"While I was still in the hospital."
